1 then rebid some until I declare is the main strategy. So what happens next?

partner is strong but his srenght in the minors won't help much, I'd just bid 4 also.

Bidding 4 over 2 is splinter in standard, or some weak 6-5 majors?

Actually, these hands are very easy to bid.

Open 1, rebid 4.

I have no idea what it would be in a p/u partnership, with my regular partner it would be a splinter in support of 's.

Not sure about bidding only 4H over 3N, our hand is quite good. It's a downside of SAYC that partner had to jump to 3N and eat our bidding room, so it's pretty much a guess what to do over 3N between 4H and 5H.

Slam seems pretty good, definitely above 50 I would think though I don't know what the right line is

I suppose that seeing both hands, but not the opponent's hands, you would like to give 6 a try. But if the 9 were the 9 you would be happy to settle for 4 (unless an opponent flashes his hand). And of course that T9 of improves your chances. Hard to uncover all of this.

I suppose that playing 2/1 the auction could, maybe would, begin 1-2-2-2NT-3 but then what? With good luck the hands could produce 13 tricks, with bad luck 11. I would not fret about landing in 4.

Btw: As long as 1-2-2 cannot be passed out (and even in SAYC it cannot), this leaves 3 and 4 to have special meanings. I am not sure I like 4 as a splinter. More precisely, I am sure that I don't like it but I am not sure that I am right.

I'd bid 5H over 3NT, hate the system btw.
and the result can be plotted on a graph.

I hate the system too but maybe it's not easy to bid in any system.

On this hand it does not help that much. However the main hand we are worried about, where partner is slam suitable and has 3 hearts but cannot move in the actual auction over 4H since it's not a slam try, would be able to cuebid here.

Imagine an auction in 2/1 being:

1S 2D
2H 2N
3H 4C

That is a great auction for our hand, and we will easily bid a slam (and possibly a grand). On some of the hands where the auction might have gone that way, it will in this auction go

1S 2D
2H 3N
4H

In our SAYC auction. That sucks, since we've missed a cold slam.

Alternatively on this hand the auction might go:

1S 2D
2H 2N
3H 3S
4C 4H

Now we know partner doesn't have the ace of diamonds, does have the king of hearts, and is 2-2 in the majors. We will probably move for slam now.

Even if we don't move for slam, at least partner can still move himself with the nuts. At least partner knows we have slam interest, and is involved in our auction. In our corresponding SAYC auction of

1S 2D
2H 3N
?

We know nothing, yet have to make an immediate decision. There is no cooperation in our auction.

In 2/1, does
1-2
2-2NT
3-3NT
4
imply some slam interest, because opener didn't bid 4 over 2NT? That might not help on this deal, but it might save us opposite some more suitable responding hands.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn
