At neither vul I'd open 4♦, at only our side vul I'd open 1♦, and at both vul I'd choose between those but probably lean toward 1♦.

Surely that must depend on what partner expects for a 4♦ preempt. If partner expects this much and does not dive then we should be ok - at least on average.

For me this is 4♦ we expect a little more for 5♦. Although I wouldn't mind too much if partner chose 5♦ but she knows I might raise to six.

Perhaps a good strategy is to open 4♦ and doubling 4M to say "I want to bid 5♦ but I'm xing 4M just in case".

A 5♦ opener usually just gets doubled and we probably donate 500 - which may bad or it may be good.

I could open 1♦ but then I wouldn't know what a 5♦ rebid looks like. Oh wait....
