The following situation is hypothetical, but based upon actual events.

South's hand:

Scoring: IMP

Bidding is as folllows (N-S silent):
1C(a)-2D(a1)
2S-3C
4N(a2)-5D(a3)
7C

(a) precision = 16+ points
(a1) 5+ 8+ points
(a2) RKC
(a3) 1 key card

There is a long hesitation before N makes his final pass. E-W are expert players.

The hesitation is certainly UI, but does it preclude a diamond lead? After all, South knows where 12 of the diamonds can be found, and East would likely not have a void for RKC.

By the way, in real life, North bid 7 and East, after some thought, bid 7NT which made easily (he had to choose from 5 tricks, 5 tricks, 3 tricks, and 1 trick. 7 would have gone down on a lead as East had the singleton Ace.

I think your argument demonstrates that there is no logical alternative to a diamond lead.

The lead is obvious, there are no alternatives.

The diamond lead might be obvious, but it is certainly not bullet-proof. (1 entry in dummy and the single ace with partner.)

Also, if partner has the K single, a diamond lead might reveal this prematurely, giving declarer an easier time chosing the right line.

To a (much) lesser extent, even the Q might do that.

But if there is a logical alternative to a diamond lead, is not obvious, but I would consider it.

I carry a spare K in my wallet (seriously). Maybe my partner does the same.

Barring more than 13's in the deck, I think we know what the best lead is here, regardless of the tank.

Holding six diamonds, a non-diamond lead may be a LA. Not 7.

Huh?

Remember we are talking bout the hypothetical 7 contract, E-W were expert players who had tools besides RKC to bid this if East were void in .

Also recall that East went to 7 after West showed 1 key card. If Partner has the A, East must be missing two key cards. He could hardly bid 7 still missing a key card that might not be in his void suit. So we can rule out that possibilty.

Finally, I might mention that NS and their teammates were, at best, intermediate players who, in a longer match, would have been hopelssly outclassed. But this was the 7th board of a 7 board match where the previous 6 would have seemed fairly flat, with EW and their teammates likely picking up a couple of IMPs on overtricks. Bidding 7 if it seemed at all risky, why not settle for 6? Why risk a big swing on this if you need to locate a singleton honor?

Sure, it is not impossible that East has a void, just unlikely. After the hesitation by North I would wager that if East is void, then West has 6.

But the point of the post is not whether the diamond lead was bullet proof, but whether South had a logical alternative, and there seems to be agreement that there was none.

One more comment as a postscript fromme - I was East at the other table. There we got a heart pre-empt at North's first opportunity to bid (After 1-(P)-2) and I ended up playing 6NT after partner asked about Aces. (I tanked before passing - I was trying to figure out if he would have bid this way without at least an the A and a red king. I had all the other Aces and Kings, 5-2-1-5 shape and could count 13 tricks if he had these cards.) Had North passed, we win the match. We lost 3 IMPs on the other 6 boards, so this one was the match.
