^^ agree. If pard can now bid 3♠, we're in a fine position to go on. Of course, in practice he'll have

Kx
x
AKQJxxx
QJx

and we skillfully managed to wrong-side 3NT :P

3NT. Other bids looks like masterminding a system just for this hand.

So you give up any hopes of playing hearts if responder is 5-5 or 6-5 in majors ?

Why can't I bid 4♥ over 3NT/4♦?
Still decidedly intermediate - don't take my guesses as authoritative.

3NT. This feels like wtp to me, especially at matchpoints. Partner's extras compensate for the misfit.

Unless we play some clever system so that partner has denied 3-card spade support, I would just rebid spades. Partner is expected to bid 3NT over that most of the time without a fit.

Is there some reason partner can't have

Kxx
Axx
AKQxxx
x

?

Do 3H bidders play 3S shows 6 spades?

I'll be happy if we got to 3N by responder. I'm not good enough to get to a better contract.

Yeah, that makes sense. The question is what will partner do with say:

Qx Qx AKJxxx Axx

If he is going to bid 3NT you will miss better 6-2 spades games. If he bids 4♠ you will end up in inferior contract on hands like the one in the OP.
I like 3♠ nevertheless. 3NT seemed obvious to me but now I am not so sure. I am so used to playing "clever system" here that I don't take into account possiblity that partner can still have 3♠ for his 3♦ jump.

I think it should go

3♠-4♠
4NT-5♠
6NT

for a good board, or

3♠-4♠
4NT-5♠
6♠

for a board whose result will depend on the lead, or

3♠-4♠
pass

for a bad board.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

I would have rebid 2NT with that.

sorry gnasher, you get a good board for 3S-4S, nothing else

LHO has something like

98xxx
Axx
x
xxxx

:)

our auction was

3S-4S
5N-7S which LHO happily doubled. he messed up the defence for only -500 and 2% for us.

morale: don't bid 5NT when you haven't discussed it, especially if no meaning is really your hand anyway.
