I'd say 100% North and an extra 20% South...

North, he must have had an A or K hidden when he bid this.

They deserve each other, the south hand shouldn't open 1♣ if they're going to rebid 2♣, and N must be used to partner opening 9 counts.

I'd probably treat the south hand as a strong no trump as I don't fancy opening 1♣ and rebidding 3♣.

Hmmm looks like lots of blame to laid to both players.
1) North didn't open and so must be ready to push hard in the auction
2) I would like to see what South considers a 3♣ call over the 1♠ response.
3) Pass=/= push hard in the auction over 2♣

IMO they should both be sentenced to 6weeks of daily attendance in the intermediate hand evaluation training camp. ... OP put in a call for Onedown or whatever the equivalent 911 code is.

1C-2C is in the realm of possibility/normality, passing it with a prime 12 and a club fit is not.

In general an opening bid opposite an opening bid is game, but even if 12 is marginal it should be invited. Here it's not marginal because it is completely prime and has Jxx of clubs.

South obviously felt a little weak for 1C 3C which is fine, but if he did he should open 1N (my choice). 1C 2C is too weak of a sequence, and is usually 11-15.

I am OK with both 1NT opening or 3♣ rebid.

1♣ then 2♣ is feeble but it is not a horrible misjudgement either.

Passing from north is idiotic. I am sorry about my language but I can find no kinder word which would do justice to this action. Not saying N is an idiot but pass shows no respect to the game bonus. Disagree with Jillybean, I think N should bid 3♣ even without the ♥K  As it is, N should bid 3NT. 2NT is also feeble but it is not terrible either.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

that, except:

1) "idiotic" ch to brain fart
2) 2NT would be my choice (responder's rebid)
3) 1C opening was just unprepared for a rebid --common among B/I
4) Not ok, with 3C rebid by opener after 1C (see "3)", above.

Why do I think there will be a change in the post for the responding hand due to a typo? Maybe because that hand passed originally?

North must have had the K hidden to pass in the first instance, this is an easy opening for me - wtp? He still hasn't sorted his hand after his partner opened the bidding. I think south is conservative but the blame is 100% North

So there was a typo...N had ♥K82 rather than ♥K83

But sadly, nothing wrong beyond that...

Anyway, very useful responses...so thanks to all. In retrospect, I clearly didn't plan ahead enough. Would open 1N given another chance. I'm actually not scandalized by my pick-up pd's refusal to open, but I didn't like not bidding beyond 2C.

I like North's first pass. No problem with that.

I dislike 1NT opening by south a lot, but that's just me.

I don't hate 1♣/2♣, though obviously opposite 9-10 there may be a game on. How many would think, I wonder, that 3♣ is forcing?
Still decidedly intermediate - don't take my guesses as authoritative.

0? Why would anyone think 3♣ is forcing?

While I'd jump rebid 3♣ as South and consider it a minimum, North has to be brain-dead to pass 2♣ with a 12 count.

obviously north has taken too many tranquilisers.

as for south, i hate 1C - 3C.

i would open 1NT, but if i had forgot to open 1NT, i'd choose 2C too.

Why do people dislike 1NT, is the hand too strong?
and the result can be plotted on a graph.

a)not opening N hand
b)passing 2♣

:P is obviously more terrible as we may still have 28hcp combined (playing standard); as to a) I feel that if people just count points and open every 12, every 11 with 6+card suit or at least 5-4-3-1 distribution they would do a lot better than "using judgment" or all those "rules of 20" etc.

There is nothing wrong with S' bidding. Maybe 1NT is better, maybe not. This is difficult problem which can't be answered by simple reasoning. Not everybody wants to hide 6♣ which will frequently lead to worse partscores/missed slams. 2♣ rebid is normal in standardish methods. You just don't pass it with 10's and most 9's.

Don't you hate it when you try to quote a "b" with an end-bracket, and get an emoticon?

Or (b) untick the enable emoticons checkbox when posting a "b" with an end bracket. Of course, I don't know what you should do if your post has little yellow faces as well as a bracketed b, but hey.
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.
