I played at the club with Gerben tonight! Everyone knows that he is a great player and he is also a great partner, we finished with 59% and another Monster Point to bring his total to 2.

Here is one of the hands, I'm south.

Scoring: MP

(P) P (1) ?

:P Pretty clear pass against competent opponents. So little to gain, so much to lose. It is within shouting distance of the cusp, so 2 might work against weak opponents merely because it makes them face an unusual bidding situation.

Now West will pass and wait for partner to reopen with a double. I was saved when
East rebid 's and I managed to dodge the -1100 lesson.

JB: one of the clearest warning signs one can have, in terms of an overcall on borderline hands, is your holding in the suit bid on your right. J10x is effectively xxx, and is the worst possible holding. You should always pull in a bit when you have such a holding, because it is very common to have the defence begin with 3 rounds of the suit. In addition, your relative length in rho's suit (which is usually 5 cards even fro those who often open 4 card majors in 3rd seat) increases the chances that LHO lacks a fit and that is the most dangerous time (for you).

You will have crossed a significant point in your advancing as a bridge player when you see hands like these as 'wtp....pass'. To me, this hand isn't remotely a bid.

Hi Mike. I think I am becoming disciplined in my bidding, but then every now and then the little voice in my head urges me to bid, especially when I am playing with good players.

The advice here and that Gerben gave me after the game is very useful.

We really had a good game JB, enjoyed it. I was glad opps bid here rather than double, 3 doesn't look too good either...

On other news, I was particularly happy about the hand where we made 4 on the 4-3 fit :)

True, this time I would have been rescued.

But if east had passed it out (much more reasonable than some people think) no one would have been able to save you from -400 in 2 undoubled.

Yes, this was a good board. :) This is the hand, maybe you can recall the auction.
