Playing rkc 1430, how do you play exclusion responses? The same 1430, do you change to 03, 1, 2 to conserve space, or something else?

Switch so that you don't force to slam opp 0 in some auctions (eg, 5H exclusion, suit is spades, obv you want 5S to show 0 here).

Don't play exclusion if you can help it in any but practiced partnerships. I've seen too many exclusion mistakes and not enough victories.

That said, I (almost) always play rkc 1430 and (almost) always play exclusion 03-14 and think that is fairly standard locally.

I see a lot of people making combinations of the statements

1) Exclusion is easy to mess up.
2) Exclusion does not come up frequently enough to justify playing it.

FWIW I think both are untrue. I have never messed up exclusion in my life, and the last three times it came up for me were all in pickup partnerships where we each assumed the other was playing 3014 exclusion without discussion. I know this may not be a typical experience, given that I generally play with young and experienced players, but I'm just saying my impression of the convention is very positive, and that it comes up a lot.

That said I know someone who recently thought 1S X 5D was exclusion keycard. If you are one of these kinds of people then it's a different matter.

With the exception of those who are old and experienced, I wouldn't attempt exclusion with casual partners. With my regular partner we play rkc1430 and excl 03,1,2 (I hope I never have to use excl missing 4 keycards) This was just a general question to find out what others are playing and if 0314 is the standard.

The most important response is not to pass!

Teammates did this yesterday, and since responder only had a singleton, the resulting 1-0 trump fit did not play too well. I think Burn's law of total trumps* is a useful guide in these situations....

* In its simplest version as far as I can recall this states that the total number of trumps held by the declaring side should be greater than the total number of trumps held by the defending side.
