The contract was 4S.
I played a to the K and returned a small taken by East with his Q.
Now I had a brain misfunction and thought that J was high and claimed all tricks.

East has to return a to AQ in dummy. Will EW get another trick or not?
(Maybe I even said in the claim that a goes on the J, but if East has to play a it would be very illogical not to play A iso J?)

I don't understand anything. Didn't you play the K at trick 8?
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

Sorry, corrected now (I hope).

You thought the CJ was high so when a diamond is returned to one of your top honours why might you not play that card rather than the other top diamond honour? The fact that you have suggested the CJ is good means that this is hardly irrational. One trick to the opponents, I think.

Interisting.

Are you compelled to play a card that you think is high rather than one that is clearly high? That sounds irrational to me.

If it goes diamond to the K and A then on the board you have the Q of diamonds and the J of clubs, both of which are good. It doesn't matter which one you play you will win, according to your thinking. Turns out this isn't so, but I don't think you get it.

A card that is clearly high is high in your mind.

A card that you know is high [thinks was not strong enough for what happened] is high in your mind.

These are equivalent: why should I play one card I know is high rather than the other card I know is high?
