This happened at the club last night. Playing 2/1:

Scoring: MP

1 - (p) - 1NT - (p)
3NT - (p) - ?

Because this is posted, I bet partner has something like:

A K Q x x x
A x
Q x x
A x

Why did I bid 1N forcing when I have what appears to be a perfectly normal spade raise?

(fwiw, I would correct to 4 now, and kick myself for not bidding 2 initially).
Is the word "pass" not in your vocabulary?

4 would show a very weak hand with spade support. So on the presumption you were treating this as a limit raise in spades I would just bid 6 now. 4NT is not (at least not obviously) keycard, 4 and 5 (and 5 if you consider that?) all seem natural without discussion, and 5 is possible as a value bid but I don't see how it will help our accuracy much at all unless we have detailed agreements anyway.

Why would i bid 2 with well over a "normal" spade raise? This is at least a limit raise if not more.

8HCP + 2 for the stiff club + 1-2 for the long diamonds = 11-12. I'm almost willing to game force with this hand and bid 2 and then raise spades on my next bid.

However, with the bidding shown, I've worked myself into a jam.

4 is likely an underbid. 6 is my call

With Oneferbrid's example companion hand, we would still not get to 7, but it is roughly what we would expect from the 3NT rebid --6 spades, game opposite a minimum responding hand, sort of balanced.

1NT was the start of a 3-card limit raise in spades? O.K., but unless 4D is defined as accepting spades with a concentration of values in Diamonds, we just have to blast to 6S. 4S might be only 2-card support, since opener showed 6.

BTW, if 4D is a spade try, 4NT (6 keys in play), might get the grand. We don't have that agreement, but maybe we should.

complete your planned action which was to show support over partner's forced call over 1NT. I would call 4 in case partner turns stupid on me and passes (I hate going down :) ) and bid 5 if instead he calls 5. You are forced to do it like this because of his 3NT call (probably instead of a sane 2NT call). A direct 4 would show a much weaker hand.

mainly because your hand is good enough IMO for a 3card limit raise.

If you expect using the short clubs and the long diamonds on this deal you better bid 7 now.

The rest of the story: being jammed, I blasted 6 and we were the only pair to bid slam. Everyone made 12 tricks. Partner had something like
AQJxx AK Qxx Kxx but I can't remember exactly.

If I had to do it again, I'd probably bid a GF 2 in response to the opening. By our system his next bid would have been 3NT, after which I have a 4 bid to keycard for spades.

Jdonn would now say: to bad we don't have a bid that shows 18-19 balanced.
and the result can be plotted on a graph.

No I would say: too bad we don't have a bid that shows 18-19 balanced.
