Scoring: IMP

(4)-4N-(P)-5
(P)-6-(P)-7
(X)-P-(P)-7NT
(P)-P-(X)-AP

I'm curious what the expert auction here is.

Pretty tough to get to 7 after N bids 4N. I guess he's a little light for it, but its a bit of a crapshoot.

Regardless of the first few rounds of bidding, I don't agree with south panicking and pulling to 7NT. If he's going to panic, he should at least try 7, as his hand screams playing in a suit contract.

Driving to 7D is way way way too much. Even if partner has AQxxxx of trumps 7 is bad after a 4S opener. Gambling on solid trumps for a grand when you have Kx is not good.

So what's the winning auction with these hands? Also, is there an intelligent way to bid grand when N is --/xxx/AQJXX/QJXXX?

I think you are asking for a lot when your side starts the bidding at 4NT.

No one can be very accurate given that little amount of space to operate.

I suppose that 7 is the best possible grand - well over 50%. But still, I would not be ashamed to miss it.

Definitely agree. Collecting your small slam bonus seems wise on this hand.

As far as how they should be bid at the table, I don't know. 100 experts might have 100 different opinions about how the bidding should go.

It really is sort of random.

The only two auctions that appeal to me are starting with 5 and accepting 6 as the final contract -- a lot of things we don't know about for 7 -- or perhaps bidding 6 the first time, hoping partner takes this to mean solid hearts plus enough cards in the minors that we aren't panic-stricken about the quality of his diamonds.

Preempts work.

Yeah this, I wouldn't worry much about finding 7H.

Hearts are 5-0 anyway; 7N makes on a heart-club squeeze and dropping the DQ doubleton onside. Certainly not the best grand I've ever been in.

Thanks for the input.
