Scoring: MP

Auction proceeds:

(1) pass (1) 1;
(pass) 2 (x) pass;
(3) 3 (4) ???

You have no special agreements in this auction as to the difference between 2 and 2 and what pass means over 2x. Even if you wouldn't bid this way, if you were plopped into this auction, what would you bid at this point?

Pass.

I have a reasonable expectation of beating 4 on a spade lead, but I have no idea how many tricks we are making in spades.

If partner cannot bid 4 on his own after I overcalled 1 on this "hand," then we are probably not making 4.

I'm doubling because I don't want partner to bid 4.

Well, the 5 trumps should have some nuisance value ;)

More to the point, if partner's 2 bid meant something specific, like a limit raise in spades, then I'm clearly passing. I've already (over)bid my hand, and partner has bid his hand (and won't take action over 4). But, if partner's 2 bid was general strength, which is what the OP said, then I think I'm closer to beating 4 than making 4, and partner will do *something* over 4. IOW, I'm playing partner for general strength and a shape like 3-1-4-5, rather than a heart void and 4-0-4-5. If partner has that hand, he should raise spades to whatever level he thinks is appropriate, instead of messing around with a cue bid.

Why will partner do something over 4H? He bid 3S non forcing, there is no reason to think he will bid 4S now.

Don't know if you're being sarcastic or not, but there were two votes for the insane assylum, which I intended as an option for commenting on my first bid.

I'd have overcalled 2. If that's not your partnership style, 1 is fine. Overcalls don't promise anything any more.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

I passed.

I was playing with a UCLA student at an evening (normal) club game in a rather weak field consisting of three tables.

The full hand was:

something like this...

I led the K, it held. I then led a low spade, ruffed in dummy. Declarer then played diamonds, which my partner won and played back another, which I ruffed.

Then the funny thing happened: I played another spade, declarer ruffed on the table, and then pitched the 2 from her hand! For some reason dummy elects not to say anything (this is ACBL so he could ask), and at the end of the hand, declarer has an extra spade loser, plus the revoke trick! down 4! For an average board. If I had doubled, I would have saved 1/2 a matchpoint, tying another table playing in 4x-4. It was rather amusing.

This is a mega agreement I have too.

But this holds not true in this hand. Partner has a heart chicane and some high card values but still did not splinter. So he holds at most 3 trumps and some values in the minors. He will not bid 4 spade here as a sacrifice.
Kind Regards
