What was your partner's hand?
Probably he misbid but maybe he has something like KQx xxx AKQxx xx and he didn't want to bid notrump and wasn't sure how to make a strong diamond raise. Although partner really should have four spades, I would have passed 5♦ with your hand because only a three card spade suit can explain partner's jump to 5♦.

I had taken 5 diamond as Exclusion and answered 5 NT....
Partner should be very angry- about himself for bidding a major he did not want to play.
I know one top pair here which frequently bids 3 card majors to a minor opening- but they can do this because they have discussed a lot of the following sequences. If you did not, you should not lie with majors.

Happens with pickup partners for lack of agreements, I played for a long time without inverted minors, and this kind of bidding happened quite often. Althou we normally switched back to 3NT rather than 5m.

My partners hand held 6 diamonds, AQxxxx I think.
Yes, his card was empty, and since I had 3D's, I chose Spades.
Anyway, thanks for the replies.

This is a tough bidding problem in a system without a forcing minor raise. This is why most experienced players play inverted minors, criss-cross, or something similar these days. Without it, you're forced to fabricate a forcing bid, as your partner did, and then you may never be able to convince your partner that you don't have what that bid showed.

Help

My partner Bid 1 Spade.
I say 2 Spades.
My Partner bids 5 Diamonds.
I think a bit and then bid 5 Spades.
My partner gets angry and I see he holds 3 spades in his hand.
I'm confused...
