This will be absolutely unanimous.
4H is a descriptive bid, saying I have clubs and 4-card hearts and strong hand so I expect 4H to make opposite a minimum response.  It is not a signoff.

Responder should have started slam investigation.

Yes..100% pard's fault.

I note that I don't care to splinter here with the stiff ace.

funny I keep overlooking that since it isn't capitalized but I still remember to count it for 4 bid :P

Either your partner is a very rude palooka, or he did not notice your 1 opening, perhaps thinking that he had opened, then your 4 would be a signoff
This seems like the only logical reason for his comment

I stopped using splinters without prior agreement after 1 - 4 was followed by the inevitable 3 passes

One of my alltime favorite bridge hands involved 14 cards opposite 12 cards. It's from one of my favorite bridge books.

There's also a great example in this book: http://www.amazon.com/Theory-Practice-Game...g/dp/1559212233

I assume that somebody else already pointed out that the opening hand has 5 diamonds and 4 clubs?
and the result can be plotted on a graph.

Yes there is an extra card. If you had to guess given the bidding and the hand strength would you think it was a or a . How would you then bid this hand in expectation of a 1 response to your minor opening bid? The choices look to be a rebid of 2, 2 or 3 and as a last weird possibility 2NT?!
