Well, we've already covered the director asking you to do something illegal or contrary to the laws of bridge but in my opinion if a director is being paid it is to run the event smoothly, efficiently and in line with the law. He may not always get it right but taking the view that you are paying him and can thus refuse a lawful instruction is not going to do anything to make the game better.
If a club pays a director and doesn't like what he does then they can dismiss him but until that point he is in charge

It occurs to me that we pay the cops, too, through our taxes. I suppose there are people who refuse to do what a cop tells them to do, and cites "I pay your salary, you work for me!" as a justification. I'm willing to bet they don't get very far.
