I would have opened this nice A + AK + 10-10 + 9-9.

If you never raise with 3 trumps then 4H is fine. If you sometimes raise with 3 trumps then I prefer 3C.

Seriously? I finally learn to be extremely cautious valuing unsupported soft honors, and now I'm supposed to value two unsupported tens to help me come up with an opening bid?

I'm a big fan of opening AAK's. This one's pretty decent as we have 2 of the honours in the same suit.
Anyway, if partner can raise with 3 trumps then I will make the bid that allows me to ask partner what he has (3 or 4 trumps, min or max).

Like Phil I would have opened. A game bid is fine but 4♥ might put you in a 4-3 fit if partner finds a reason to need to raise with 3 so I would bid 3NT and leave partner to correct if he actually held 4.

When I played K-S, any hand with 3 quick tricks was a mandatory opener.
I was bd71's partner. I had 13 HCP, so if he opens, it's hard to stop short of game.
I seriously thought of passing 1♥, as game seemed out of reach after his initial pass. The intent of my raise was to show support and make it difficult for opponents to get into the action. Was this reasonable?

I wouldn't blame you for passing. Generally when I raise in this situation I try to show a very good minimal opener.

They cashed their top diamonds right away, W had AQxx of clubs, and one of them (I believe E) had 4 trumps and a natural trump trick. So we lost 1H, 2D, 1C...I don't think there was any play for the game as the cards lay (which obviously doesn't mean bidding game is wrong).
