A natural 2NT isn't ideal, because it's light on values, overstates the diamond holding, and may wrongside the contract. I don't want to get to 3NT opposite KQ10xx Axx xx Axx or Axxxx AKx Qx Jxx. If I did bid 2NT, it would be in the hope that partner would bid some more spades.
I might pass, planning a sequence like
1♠ 2♦ pass pass
dbl pass 3♦
or
1♠ 2♦ pass pass
dbl pass 3♠
Both of these must show this sort of hand - not 3-card spade support, not four hearts, not good enough diamonds for 2NT or a penalty pass, and hence some club length. I'd probably choose the second sequence, which shows a more suit-oriented hand. If partner bids 3NT over that, I can pass happily.
After
1♠ 2♦ pass pass
2♥ pass
I'd still bid 3♠. That shows this hand-type, for the same reasons as before.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn
