Scoring: IMP

1-(1)-DBL-(3!)
Pass-(4)-??

This can easily go -2 if you can get some ruffs; Do you DBL if that is penalty?

PS1:...Do you DBL if it is penalty like (partner can run without and a min hand

PS: Do you think it is best to play DBL as penalty here, or is it better to play it as take-out. eg for hands with 1=4=3=5...?

Pass.
1) No
2) Takeout/values. Much more frequent when the opponents have a 9+fit and you certainly don't want to force to the 5 level unilaterally (if we're short in spades, partner is long in them).

I would play the double as cards. Partner passed already after 3 , so there are many hands he cannot have- like a good hand with 4 HEarts.

But no matter what your agreements are, this is an easy pass. If you are happy enough to score 5 tricks, be happy. There are millions of ways this could make- starting with hands where partner does not possess the ace of diamond...

X is certainly penalty, I fail to see a sensible other meaning (*).

But I will pass.

With kind regards
Marlowe

PS: (*) The Penalty X does not need to be based on a trump stack,
i.e. "card showing" is included in my understanding of "penalty", at
least in the given seq.

Didn't I show 8-ish with neg X? Did partner hear me? Why bid again?

Penalty/Takeout get blurred at this level. Try 'I have good stuff'. Do Something Intelligent Partner.

I'll double. Pard didn't double 3, so he rates to have a 12-14 NT type of hand, meaning they're at the 4 level with at most 21 hcp and an 8 card fit.

Sure, maybe it makes. But it can also go 2 down easy B)

We will probably get a heart lead so they will make it.

Since we are on lead there is something we can do about this.

My partner DBLed. He is around the same age as you and I thought it could be related to that. ;)
He argued that if I have A then it will likely be down and probably -2.

You have to pass here even if you think they are down since double shows values, it's not strict penalty and partner may not pass it. Will you feel happy if he pulls to 5?

Scoring: IMP

This was the full hand and the bidding:
1-(1)-DBL-(3)
Pass-(4)-DBL...

....You see that the DBL was good....
But I wasn't good enough to pass it :)

I was kind of encouraged by your previous post to try to be ironic. :) ..
