3nt opener--alternative to gambling

I liked the suggestions in that thread but I cannot remember what they were. i also cannot find the thread after a number of attempts to do a search for it.
Can anyone help me either by pointing out the thread or by indicating what other "better" uses for the 3nt opener might be. Thanks.

I believe I want to start playing it as a hand that wants to open 4 diamonds or 4 clubs but cannot as my partnerships play namyats..

That works as well as anything, IMO.
Gwnn could probably find multiple threads on this, but (if legal in your jurisdiction, which would not be in GCC events in the ACBL) it works much better to reverse the procedure and open 3NT with the major hands and your minor with the minor hands.
