Anyone who claims they'd bid slam is either lying or appallingly bad, so let's not assign blame on the basis of slam being cold.

And who the heck says that 4♠ created any kind of force, such that West's pass is offensively oriented?

Wouldn't we all bid 4♠ with something like QJxxxxx x x xxxx? I surely would (although I play transfers at the 4-level after a 2-level overcall).

If EW had an agreement that 4♠ created a force, then in my view, East ought to bid over the 5♥.

If EW didn't have that agreement, then maybe West could bid....if he trusts the opps, they rate to have 10-11 hearts, and now his hand is golden...it has to be at least a trick better than his partner was playing for when he bid 4♠....when that happened, opener could have had xx Kxx AQxx AKxx, as one simple modification creates.

But, let's get real here....most of the blame goes to NS for a brave sequence. And an unusual one, at least at high level bridge....very few pairs can even make a one-suited natural 2♥ overcall anymore! [this hand is one of many reasons to not play BBO's favourite but bad overcall structure....capelletti].

if EW play FP here....then east gets the blame....if not, then west does, but neither deserve much criticism.

I remember that we had exactly the same kind of board in the french national training session in september.

OUR AGREEMENT after mishandling this :
It depends what is the sense of 4♠, compared to a slower approach of bidding lebensold/rubensold. We agreed that we would need at least 6-4 (or 7-3) with short trumps to bid a direct 4♠. Then the pass over 5♥ is F1, and asks for extra distributional values. We would have considered that East already described a mildy distributional hand by 4♠, and assign the blame to West.
We would never try to bid slam.

I think west should just bid 5♠. But that might be partly since I don't think pass should be forcing anyway.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

I hate the agreement that pass is forcing.

That said, if partner made a forcing pass and I had the east hand I would bid!

West should really bid 5♠. Good honor placement and good support.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

No forcing passes after Texas!!! At any vulnerability. However, West does have about as close to a FP if you played it, so East has a very clear 5♠ call.

Hard to spread out too much blame, although at the table I would either bid 5♠ as West (see Mike's), or double as East to say, I have a little something here, and West would pull I think.

The CoC says pass was forcing, so 5 ♠ is a wtp with the East hand.

If the queston had been w/o a forcing pass, it had been much trickier but I think both should have bid 5 spade in that case. :)
Kind Regards
