What do you call?

What do 2/3 show for you?

Would you act differently at IMPs?

Re Pearson, I always open when I have opening bid strength and only look at the spade holding when I haven't. This hand is strong enough that the spades don't matter.

I'll bid 3 and expect to make it at least 80% of the time. We might miss a game but it's only matchpoints and I want to start high because I'm scared of letting them get to 3.

Classic 4th seat 3 for me. I would do the same regardless of the scoring - pearson considerations not relevant to this hand.

Opponents are probably cold for 4, opening is gambling that partner has 5 of them.

opening 1 or 2 hearts will ask the opponents to bid spades and find their fit, opening 3 might be better, but people only open 3 when they are worried about spades, so opponents might bid spades anyway.

I pass, second option 4 hearts.

IMO your choices are pass or 3 and I rate them about equal

I agree with Fluffy - the opponents are pretty likely to be cold for 4S. They are unfavourable though and might not be able to enter the auction if you open at a high level.

There isn't really a right answer to a tactical problem like this - i'd base my decision on the opponents' tendencies. Versus opponents who tend to bid a lot, I'll pass. If my opponents are more timid I'll open some number of hearts between 2 and 4.
