Holding (both vulnerable, imp's):

♠85
♥K853
♦4
♣AQ8753

Bidding goes:

Pa Pa 3♦ Pa
Pa X Pa ???

(this was taken from ACBL's Bridge Bulletin)

However, what if it were:

3♦ X Pa ???

Is it a different situation?

Moreover:

Pa Pa 3♦ X
Pa ???

(yeah I guess some of you wouldn't have passed the first time, would you?)

What's your take?

Also, he rates to not have a heart void when he leads the ♥3.

Definitely different situations b/c partner is a passed hand in the first example so the expected HCP in his hand is necessarily lower, less than 12 and probably no less than a really good 8.

In the next two examples I'd probably be disappointed if partner showed up with <12 HCP but he's certainly allowed to do so.

Anyway this hand rates to play well in a suit and since we're all red at IMPs I won't take any chances: 4♥

If I'm bidding game, I bid 4♦, showing two places to play. If you play 4♦ as promising the majors, this hand shows why it shouldn't.

I'd do that in all three auctions, with varying degrees of confidence.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

4♦, anything else is clearly wrong unless you have made a bad agreement that 4♦ means something else.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

the only time i wont bid 4D is facing a passed hand non-vul at MP, and even there it wouldnt surprised me if game makes.
From Psych "I mean, Gus and I never see eye-to-eye on work stuff.
For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

4♦ is two places to play? So I guess over 4♠ we-d bid 5♣ then.

4♦ in all three, but quite nervous about the first.

Exactly my thoughts and on some days I just bid 3 Hearts on the first example.
Kind Regards

I bid 3♥ as the probable best MP score

If Partner was not a passed hand I bid 4♦ and correct 4♠to 5♣
