Leading from QJx A question about leads.

My new partner's opening lead was the J from club holding of QJx. I know that some players lead that way, but I also know that most, or so I think:), naturally lead the Q. Isn't leading the Q standard unless there is an understanding between the partners? We scored badly due to my confusion on the lead.

There are three reasons to lead the jack:
1. You have agreed on some non standard leads like "Journalist leads".
2. You want to be funny and confuse partner and/or declarer.
3. You have no idea of the game.
So your partner was somewhere between 2 and 3, I guess the latest.

Q is standard. J is Rusinow (Journalist) or tricky or random.
In the absence of a specific agreement, you would expect that the lead of the J would deny the Q.

Are you sure? I'm too lazy to look it up, but I think rusinow and journalist are different... I think journalist is the jack denies a higher honour, while the 9/10 promise 0 or 2 higher (so J from J109..., 10 from KJ10....), while rusinow is the 2nd highest honour in a touching sequence, unless doubleton... J from QJx and Q from QJ tight.

Mike's right.
I don't need to look it up

Journalist leads vs suits are basically rusinow (J from QJx). The more commonly known journalist leads are vs NT (jack denies).

Perhaps it depends on whether the contract is a suit or no trump. It was my understanding that Rusinow leads were adopted as part of the Journalist lead structure against suit contracts, but not against no trump contracts.
But I could be wrong about that.
In any event, the lead of the J from QJx is clearly a Rusinow lead.
Today, some players lead Rusinow against no trump contracts. So I guess anything is possible.

Partner wanted to lead the suit but was deathly afraid of Dummy having A10x or K10x. So, he got tricky. Just my opinion.
