I felt silly getting this wrong at the table.

Scoring: MP

Lefty overcalls your 1s with 1n, and when partner competes to 3 over 3, you take the push to 4 over 4.

1s - 1N - 2s - x
p - 3h - 3s - 4h
4s - x - ppp

They lead a high diamond spot.

I'll play LHO for AK ATxx xxx KT9x and try for an elimination.

DK. Small heart hoping for diamond return. DA. Ruff heart. Diamond to jack. Ruff heart. Spade.

Don't see how we're making this against perfect defense since whoever does not have the CK can win the heart and knock out the CA. Maybe they'll return a diamond instead.

Seems unlikely that anyone would overcall 1NT on those cards. But he could have another heart honor.

In any event, I like the idea of not worrying about an impending diamond ruff and trying to make the contract. It seems clear that you are getting a bad score on this hand unless you make, as 4 is not likely to make. I doubt that -100 will be very good.

Start by winning the diamond in dummy and playing a small heart, hoping for a non-club return if RHO wins the heart. Take note of LHO's diamond play on the second round. If you want to abandon the elimination line at this point you can do so and play for down 1. But if you think LHO led a diamond from (for example) T9x or 98x, you can play for 3-3 diamonds, eliminate the red suits and throw LHO in with a spade as suggested by y66.

By the way, the Scissors Coup was originally called the Coup Without a Name.

4 is not likely to make? Are we looking at the same hand?

Another thing I notice is there will be a few players who don't open the south hand. We are doing way better than they do as long as we make sure to beat -140, which is the best score they are likely to achieve.

I think playing for 3-3 diamonds is very bad, especially considering it also requires LHO to have AK doubleton of spades. Aside from the fact that hand is unlikely just because it's so specific, he might also have doubled with 2434. And RHO probably would have passed 3 with xx KQxxx xxx xxx, aside from the fact he probably wouldn't have doubled. And LHO would probably have led a heart instead of a diamond. There are just way too many suggestions not to play (pray?) that west has that hand.

(I haven't actually analyzed the lines of play, I just know I won't do anything that involves west having three diamonds and AK doubleton of spades.)

Losing the AK, A and K, right?

No. You are looking at the losers in 4 by NS. We are discussing the losers in 4 by EW. 4 is not likely to be cold; however, it may be makable on a club guess.
