Is it really jail or can he stay at home?

I don't think he has a home, at least LA news says his wife is homeless. She was allowed to keep two million bugs though so she should be able to afford a modest home.

150 years for stealing 65 billion dollar.
This is about a day of jail for per stolen 1.2 million dollar.
So the punishment for stealing 13,88 dollar is a 1 second of jail.

All crooks should ask their lawyers to make the judges recalculate their punishment, I guess almost all would have to be released at once.

It's not really that bad.

He should be eligible for parole in just 75 years.

Hang on Bernie, hang on. :(

150 years is fair enough but I would rather give him 5 in a real prison instead of a country club.

He'll probably end up in one with a swimming pool and a golf course. Maybe he'll take up Bridge and win BBO player of the year?

Someone should teach him stolen bid doubles. Sounds like something he might like.

That Federal prisons resemble country clubs is something of a myth, as anyone who has visited one -- or served time in one -- can attest. A halfway house or a prerelease center might not be so bad, but Madoff shouldn't be eligible for that until he has served, say, a hundred years or so.

I am reminded of the old chestnut about the fellow being sentenced in Texas for three counts of murder. The judge pronounced sentences of 100 years for each count, to be served back to back to back. The defendant cried out, "But that's 300 years, your honor: I'll never be able to do that!" "Just do your best, son," replied the judge.

No, but he probably thought that the decades he'd spend as a millionaire tens of times over would be worth it.

Btw agree with JoAnne that he is stupid. At least he should have left the US as soon as he had earned enough money.

Heh, don't forget the $170 billion fine on top.
In the UK he would, considering precedents, have been sentenced to no more than 10 years (and be out in less). Some difference, eh? (not saying which is more just, mind!).
Psych (pron. saik): A gross and deliberate misstatement of honour strength and/or suit length. Expressly permitted under Law 73E but forbidden contrary to that law by Acol club tourneys.
