[One idea is to have an option to disable chat in some tournaments]

I rarely go in the regular ACBL tourneys because it means sitting staring at the table for ages between each hand, with nobody saying anything. It's like being in an elevator with a bunch of people and everyone is trying to pretend they are alone.

Competition is fun but bridge is, when all is said and done, supposed to be a social activity. That's why there are 4 people at the table. Antisocial people could take up chess or solitaire or carving duck decoys or something. Offhand I can't think of any other team activity where everyone is expected to be mute.

I don't understand the concept of everyone being constrained because someone somewhere might sometime behave like a maggot.

You see what I get at. Any advice for me?

You're probably safe if you stick to the "Assholes Only" tournaments. :)

Hmm. "Gloating & Sarcasm" allowed in a live event ? Oh, maybe who cares when it's online.

I know nothing !

Did I step on a toe? It wasn't intentional if so..my point was simply that such activities do not require people to interact much with other people. Perfectly sociable people might enjoy any or all of those things, obviously.

lol
let's think for a moment.
suppose an opponent asks for a clarification of a bid. oh! wait! he can't!
so instead they keep clicking on the bid. there isn't that much room in the alert box, so the player being asked will explain the call in the chat window. oh. wait! they can't!
what about just general greeting and system explanation... oh. wait! not possible!

suppose your p reddots briefly, as they often do, but it usually lasts only a minute and you wish to tell opps and the director that the p will be back and ask that they not be replaced. oh. wait! you can't!

am sure there are probably a few more instances where chat is useful or maybe even neecessary.

think before you post something stupid.

Yeah, more than you at least.

heh. wow. you know, most people, when they quote, have the decency to attribute to quote to an author. i guess you never had that lesson?

also, I find it fascinating that you can't use your own argument, but rather repeat someone else's.

and what, pray tell, is the connection between being sociable and being mature? I still don't see the point here.

I can see where a TD might want to impose a "no chat" function at a table where the players have gotten into the "push and shove" mode and he needs to gain control. For obvious reasons it should not be a permanent thing, and should only be used in extreme instances to allow the TD to gain control of an out-of-control situation.

Just ask all players to mark everyone as enemy and block enemy chat.

BTW I think IRL bridge events should be confined to high-security prisons. Players should wear hand-and-foot-cuffs and mouthtape to prevent them from annoying each other and the TD.

I thought this was already being done in Britain.
