Playing in a charity unit IMP pair game yesterday the following hand happened. My partner and I, and even our opponents, normally play better than this hand - I swear. But in the spirit of the insanity and error count I thought I'd share a hilariously poorly bid/played/defended hand from yesterday that only swung 18 IMPs (hand rotated).

West now leads ♠4 out of turn. Director! Lead not accepted.

T2 ♥3 K A 8
T3 ♣2 (5+7 both played by West) A 3
♣5 stays as part of trick 3, ♣7 becomes West's second penalty card

T4 ♥7 6 9 T
South demands West lead ♠4

T5 ♠4 J 8 ♦7
T6 ♠3 T ♥2 ♠7
T7 ♥Q ♣7 ♦T ♥J

South claims throwing the ♦KQ9 on the 2 good ♣ and K♠. 6♥= for +1430.

West then berates East for a minute or two for playing the ♥K at T2.

If ever there was an ATB where the total was more than 100%, I think this might be the hand!

Am I misreading the auction? It looks like West is in fact on lead against 6♥, so how was it a lead of of turn? Somehow he lead the 4 and then changed his mind and lead the 5 instead?

I dislike 2C, I would have passed.

I dislike 4H, I would have bid 3D, second choice 3H.

6H was terrible.

Apart from the spade 4 the play is good. The postmortem was bad though.

Blame goes to west for playing out of turn and for south bidding terribly. No blame for north's 2C which was not relevant to the accident.

No, West led the 5. Declarer won the trick with the ace, then west led the 4 despite not having won the previous trick. At least that's how I read the post.

Declarer could of course have hooked the SJ, then hooked the heart and made the contract without any penalty card/lead restriction help.
