We got a poor result yesterday and we are trying to figure out where we went wrong. We were playing match points with both sides vul. Your partner East has passes and South bids 2. You have KT73 K87 At7 AT6. Would you double for takeout? I didn't. North passes. Your partner has QJ652 Q J95432 9 and passes. 3 and 3 both make. Thoughts on my pass? Thoughts on partner's pass?

You have a clear takeout double IMO. Partner cannot move over 2, because you are limited now...

Take out double is FAR from clear. There's no need to act with heart length.

I would probably replicate your auction. Would bid with pard's hand faster than with yours.

Agree with a non clear takeout double.

The shape is ugly for a takeout double. I think a double over 1 OK but not great. Over 2 pass seems right.

In the pass out seat it is said that you must (ought) to act if short in the Opponents' suit. I think this is unclear here as it not a fit auction. Perhaps the hand is a hideous misfit.

As it is MP I think a 2 balance with the plan of running to 3 would be my choice. But I can understand pass also. At IMP I feel that pass is better since I feel the upside is small and the chance of disaster does not seem worth the risk.

In 3rd position, with an "entirely" defensive hand this is a Pass IMHO, even at MPs.

On the other hand, from partner's point of view, being passed and now in the last seat, I can't think of any reason for not overcalling 2S.
It all makes perfect sense, expressed in dollars and cents.

I agree. Although, I wouldn't find much fault with a takeout X either.

I can. :P
Is the word "pass" not in your vocabulary?
So many experts, not enough X cards.

Making a takeout double with the given hand is a close decision, imo. I think that it is a double I would make... the 4th spade, the positional value of the heart King and the number of controls combine to make it my choice.

But, I would double recognizing that it could lead to a bad result... whereas the alternative is to pass, recognizing that it, too, could lead to bad result.

I don't criticize the failure to balance...

This is not a result I would agonize over too much.
