I'd bid 3♥ so that if partner bids 3♠ I can pass.

If I bid 3♠ one of two things will happen. Partner will raise or partner will bid 4-round.

They're not vul so pass is the smallest-looking minus available. And on a good day partner is like AK AK AK AK AK BAM!

I will at least consider passing.

Partner is marked with a monster of a hand. One opp opens a weak 2 bid, we are broke, and all third hand can do is further the preempt? Plus, we can be fairly certain that if we bid 3♥, partner will not pass it with his 18+ hcp and his likely diamond void.

I actually believe that pass is likely to turn out to be the winning call.

However, I am chicken and not taking this risk at IMP's (I would if it was MP). 3♥ for me.
Is the word "pass" not in your vocabulary?
So many experts, not enough X cards.

Pard is marked with a big, BIG hand (if he had a not-so-hot hand, LHO would have moved over 2♦).

Pass will usually work well if pard's big hand is of the balanced kind, but that's unlikely because 1. he rates to have a singleton diamond and 2. he could have bid 3NT if he did have that big NT hand.

Pass will also work well if pard has a 4414, but I think that's less likely than him having a 5431 or 5440 shape.

Therefore we conclude 3♥ is probably the best call here.

Pass for me at these colors. 470/570/670 is more palatable than 500/800/1100.

On a good day we'll even beat it.

I should add that passing might get a big win even if it's only +100, if other tables are like -300, thats already 9 IMPs.

Sorry, no hand for this one.

There was some novice playing with Brad Moss in the junior table and the novice doubled and moved with some 2NT opening over 3♥ on

2♦-p-3♦-x
p-3♥

and one of the experts said pd could have xxx xxx xxxx xxx!!! and I mentally replied 'hmm... that looks like a pass to me' and wanted to ask others.

Of course technically she's right, pd could have that hand, since many people would bid 3♥ on it.

The junior bid 4NT!! The after partner showed no keycards, pushed for slam with his balanced 21 count. Needless to say, after a little misdefense, Moss went down 1 in 6♥. The moral of this story is: LOL.

I think imagining partner on a balanced 21 count makes pass even more clear. Would you rather be defending 3♦X or playing 4♥X?
