West leads the ♦8, taken in hand with ♦Q. The spades need to behave for the contract to have any hope, so I banged down the ♠A. Both opponents followed, East playing the queen.

I misplayed this at the table, but the cards were fairly friendly and my line succeeded anyway. (BTW: I think this is easier than most problems appearing in this forum, but it seems on the tough side for a B/I problem).

To make it more interesting, suppose that trumps are 3-1, East having singleton queen. I draw trumps and play three rounds of clubs, ruffing. If West has four clubs, I play a double squeeze with hearts as the pivot; if East has four clubs, I play a diamond-club squeeze, using the second heart as the squeeze card. Playing on clubs after only two rounds of trumps loses when RHO is 1255.

Edit: Corrected the typo, and please ignore the first two sentences, which I would remove if Frances hadn't already quoted one of them. When I read the problem, I thought trumps were 2-2.

Only if you didn't listen to the auction.

But I agree with your revised line (after correcting typo) anyway.
Draw trumps in 3 rounds. Ruff a club in hand.
- If clubs are 3-3 claim
- If RHO has 4+ clubs run trumps and squeeze him in the minors
- If LHO has 4+ clubs run trumps for a double squeeze

The difference between the last two lines is your discard on the last trump in this position:

If RHO started with the clubs you discard a heart without thinking
If LHO started with the club you discard the club if it isn't good.

It feels easy because it's a textbook hand. But if you haven't yet read the textbook, it's not.

I only made 6 on this hand at the table No helpful diamond overcall though clarifying the risk of a diamond rough.
