In today's Daily Bulletin, there is a hand reported (on page 4) where the auction starts:
Pass-1♣-1♥-1♠
1NT
And Rodwell's 1N advance is described as a "good heart raise". Does anyone know what the rest of the structure is?
It seems a bit strange to me that with 2♣ and 2♠ available for raises, along with a direct 2♥, that a 1NT advance is used for a raise.
Perhaps 1N is a transfer to 2♣, which is a cue-bid in this case; 2♣->♦ natural; 2♦->♥; 2♥ = weak raise. But, there again, that's a lot of raises.
One might also consider that the overcall was made on ♠4 ♥KJT84 ♦973 ♣QT87, so maybe having a weak 3-card raise, a constructive 3-card raise, and a "good" 3-card raise available would be of some use. And, a natural 1N advance in the face of two bidding opponents might be something easily given up.

Rather interesting to me; I wonder if they are playing 2C/D as a natural NF here, since two suits have been introduced.

I bet you are exactly right about the transfers. The combination of being a passed hand when they open so light and that they overcall very light also probably combines to make a natural 1NT pretty useless.

1NT as a good raise seems pretty much like a waste of bidding space to me, but ok.

We have all sorts of debates about fit non-jumps at fairly high levels, but Meckwell is even using 1NT, a one-level call, in this auction the cheapest call, as a fit-bid?

Some play that 1NT is a normal raise to 2♥ showing (or denying) a top heart honour.

What do you think, is Meckwell giving up being able to bid diamonds (the only unbid suit) naturally?

The cheapest call in this auction is pass. The cheapest bid in this auction is double, which may well be their way to show values with a balanced hand and less than 3 hearts.
