W/R, holding:

Bidding goes:

Pass 1NT x 2
Pass 2 3 ???

Your 2 was stayman, of course and their double was DONT, 3 is their suit. Your call and why.

Pass. By the way, I don't like your options - I "haven't bid too much already."
Bidding 3H over a Dont bid would be invitational for me, and anyway, I am not pushing to the 3 level on an 8 card fit when trumps are likely to break badly anyway.

I'll go with 3, not caring much if pard raises it or not. Hand has a lot of playing potential.

3 looks normal.

It also looks normal for 3 to be competitive here, rather than strictly invitational.
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

3H down the middle. I wouldn't even mind if 3H here was treated as invitational, since my void can be easily compensated for trump tricks. I would just hate to give in to 3D when we have an 8 or a possible 9 card fit.

Would it change your choice had the bidding gone:

Pa Pa 1N X
2 Pa 2 3
???

Does the fact that you passed at the start change anything? What do the 4 bidders say? What would you do if you passed 3 and your partner doubled? Would you open the hand we're discussing with 2 showing 5's and a minor? How would you make somebody understand it's a bad bid?

Before I can answer your question, I'd like to know your agreements about the Stayman convention and the NT-range.
For a lot of player Stayman is a GF bid. If this is the case, I won't be able to stop anyway, so I should make sure we're on the right track.

I think they call it scrambling stayman and some answers are passable of course, I mean stayman is not FG. 1NT is 15-17.

3, if partner takes it as invitational game may have a play. If partner correctly takes it as to play, mission accomplished.

3 not invitational, and yet if partner bids game over it I am not unhappy.

You are the first and only person of whom I know, who plays or even suggests that Stayman is a GF bid. I am going toake your statement about "a lot of players" with a large grain of salt.

Curious as to how those who claim 3H is not invitational actually invite. A double of 3D here would be penalties.

Curious to see how those who claim 3 is invitational actually compete.

Obviously we can't do everything. I'm happy to bid game on most invites.

With an invitational hand I'd just bid game.

don't you play 3 as competitive, and bid game on hands that would have invited in an uncontested auction? If so, why is this different?
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

When the opponent's compete then we can't always invite.

Maybe some authority should classify this overcalling as destructive so that our side can bid more accurately without interference.

No I wouldn't Gnasher. If you bid this way you are allowing you opponents to bully you into bidding poor games. You will get a reputation for this, and it will happen with increasing frequency. For me a 3H bid here would always be invitational - always has ben, always will be; and every partner I have ever played with agrees wholeheartedly.

Obvious 3 bid for me. It's competitive only - we have no invites here. (If partner raises to game, I'm not unhappy about it.)
Kind regards,
