IMPs, White vs Red, Fourth Seat

Qxxx Axx Kx Qxxx

(1) - 2 - (2*) - ?

2 was not forcing (not clear if it promised minimal values). Partner likes to overcall 2 over 1 at this vulnerability (but he's not insane). You play 2NT here is natural.

Easy 3C even though I can have quite a bit less.
and the result can be plotted on a graph.

I double. If partner has spades, I want to hear about our double fit.

The heavy 3 is quite probably best. Why? Because..

Suppose we double or bid 2NT: if LHO supports hearts, pard, who rates to have a min overcall, may very well refrain from bidding 4 when he should. It's easier for him to bid it if he was supported. Besides, 3 isn't very encouraging to game, so if pard bids 4, he knows he won't be taken too serious.

I don't like the easy 3, we have too much, I like double and 2NT. I'd go with a double.

Yes, a simple raise seems like an underbid a bit, but the hand is not as good as it looks; the K may well be wasted.
The X alternative, imo, shd be on a 5+, better quality suit and tolerance (Qx enough I think); that's not what I have (great support and poor suit).
My guess: 3=10; 2nt=7-8; X=5-6

3. This is not a weak bid, but I admit that this hand has a lot of stuff.

A bit heavy for 3 but that is still my preference. Support with support and note that PD isn't barred from bidding over 3 with a good o/c

2NT. You have stoppers of a sort in both of their bid suits. Go for it !

The problem with a 'heavy' single raise comes when LHO bids 3 of either red suit and pard has a reasonable overcall with 6 Clubs. Your side could be on for 3NT but pard won't be able to bid it.

If they compete to 3 red you can come in with 3NT.
and the result can be plotted on a graph.

For me, 3 is completely out. If there is one thing, I'm not about to do, then it's underbiddng my good support.
2NT. With X 2nd, 3 3rd, 3NT 4th choice.

I had this hand when practice bidding with Roger and bid 3C. I bid 3C but didn't like it at all. Roger said he'd post it and I decided to stir up the discussion a little bit.

I think hands like this depend greatly on partner. Opposite some of my partners, 3 would be plenty. Opposite one partner, I would force game.

2NT for me, tooo heavy for 3, at least facing myself. Don't need much for 3NT, and partner will quite often provide it.
Kind regards,
Harald
