Obviously we can't cuebid or raise since that would show a club fit, so it's between 4♠ and 4NT. Since I like my A and K in partner's suits for playing in one of them, and the hearts are (relatively speaking) a bit skimpy, I'll bid 4♠.

4S, I've already denied 3 spades and have a very suit oriented hand (Ax Kx, DA...), this describes my hand well. 4N would be a terrible bid imo.

Okay, so you give up on slam opposite:

♠ A6
♥ QJ74
♦ A87
♣ KT4

No easy way to bid a slam, I agree. But when pd had the hand he normally has (no 2 doubeltons) a slam in a black suit is a good idea as long as partner has values there and not much wasted in the reds.
So, it was bad luck, that pd found you with a 2452 (and a honour location that makes the 1 NT opening obvious).

And 4 ♣ did not lead to the wrong contract. It was just the 4 NT bid which was wrong.
