When RHO shows out on the second heart trick, things are hopeless. Eventually we reach this ending in dummy, West still holding ♥JT and East ♠KT, having already lost two tricks.
I know I'm going down at least by one, but let's try to get rid of this diamond loser. Knowing RHO to be somewhat erratic, I lead the ♠Q hoping to catch him asleep. It turns out I'm the one who still needs coffee, as you'll soon see.
Anyway, East covers, I ruff and West overtakes it with the ♥10. He returns the ♦7.
This is where the lack of sleep comes in... I really should take the finesse, but after thinking about it I decide to try and pull a fast one on East again, even though he didn't fall for it the first time, and even if he did, he doesn't even have a small spade to throw under dummy's ♠9. Yeah, I was really outsmarting myself.
So I decline the finesse and click the ♦8. Oops, caffeine-deprived brain fart again. Duh, I can't try my hopeless nonexistent spade ruffing finesse if I don't first win the return with the ace - "Can I have an undo, please?"
Undo denied. I'd already used it once in the bidding (to cancel a negative double that was supposed to show my six hearts). Sure, I understand, they've been kind enough already. Let's get this over with.
Great. I've just given up the loser without even trying the finesse. And stupid me, now I'm sure it was there all along because West has been doubling everything that moved.
Still musing. There's no way around it now - I'm going down 2. What's taking East so long to play?
And I only have a trump to lose - why is the count showing only 3 tricks taken by EW?
Something's fishy. Where's coffee when you need it?
"play Ben"
"u there p?"
says the chat box.
OK, I'm awake now. The trick had gone ♦7 - 8 - 4 - 2. West had led from ♦KJT7. Down just 1 after all. If he had accepted the undo, I would have pulled off my brain cramp and gone down 2.
Not quite Rueful Rabbit material, but I thought I'd share.
