- This 80% is very outdated. It dropped to the high 60s after the general election, and by the latest sources I can find is 68%.
- "performing very well" seems to be your own interpretation/exageration. The outdated 80% figure was simply an approval rating, a much weaker standard.
But there is no doubt she is extremely popular among her party in her own state.

Sometimes it is rather amusing how different perceptions of reality can be...
From all I read about Palin, she hardly cared about governing, or more precisely she didn't care about a single issue besides the pipeline and spreading the wealth of the oil companies.

This is just not true.
She definitely cares a lot about making abortion illegal. She made a huge deal about this in running for mayor and then governor. She refused to endorse her mother-in-law for mayor on this issue. Whether you consider abortion an "issue" or agree with her on it is your call, but she definitely cares.
She also cares about cleaning up corruption in Alaska government. Of course, maybe the replacement people she installs are corrupt too (she seems to value loyalty over aptitude, always a dangerous sign).
And she wrote every Alaskan a check for something like $1300. If my state had a huge budget surplus like Alaska and we were all getting these kinds of checks in the mail (not to mention paying no state taxes whatsoever) I think our state government would be pretty popular too!

The annual check for residents of Alaska isn't something new under Palin, is it? I thought it had been going on for a long time.

Palin instituted a windfall profits tax on the oil companies that resulted in an EXTRA check for $1,200...

Wow, I think I'd approve of her too if I lived in Alaska!

I meant specifically caring about issues via governing. The "cleaning up corruption" stuff seemed more a political game to me, she sensed she had a better chance of running against the old boys network by running on this issue than by going along with them (as she had done earlier).
Did she take any steps towards making abortion more difficult while she was governor?
