I can't decide whether I was unlucky or just stupid on this hand. What do you think?

Scoring: IMP

pass 1♠ pass 1NT
pass 2♠ pass pass
pass

2♠ was the weaker of two ways to bid 2♠

♦2, small, 9, Q
♣J, won by West's queen
♦K, A, ruffed by East with ♠9
♠J to dummy's ace
♦ ruff, ♣ ruff, ♦ ruff
♠Q to West's king
Club to East's ace
Club ruffed and overruffed
West, down to just hearts, plays a heart, but East has the king
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

yes
I think you misplayed.

After the Diamond lead, I have 4-5 spades, one hearts and 2 Diamonds for a total of 7-8 tricks without the chances in club and the queen of Hearts.

I had played Ace of spade and low to the queen, happily seeing the jack and the 9 in these tricks. But I think that even without their apperance this line is supierior then the try to ruff Clubs.
Kind Regards

Roland

imo, you were unlucky rather than stupid.

Maybe Rosenberg can work out the percentages of various lines at the table.. I sure can't. I think it was Kantar who described hands like this as a scramble... nothing is clear.. you have to sort of scramble your way through a few tricks until you have more info and, with luck, a line will coalesce for you.

While we can all see that a diamond ruff may loom, there is no way to be sure of avoiding it... playing on trump minimizes the risk but does not eliminate it, and, in the interim, may result in club disaster even when it is otherwise successful.

The club J is clearly the correct card.. you might, on some hands, lead the club J from KQJ, so you stand some chance of catching a big fish on the play... while this is a tiny chance, no other club play offers that edge.

Then the balance of your line seems perfectly normal to me... and on a reasonable day, LHO has the heart King or 4 clubs.
