The 2♣ bidders will hear 2♠ from partner, to which they will respond 3♠ and hear partner bid 3NT on his ♠Qx.

I don't think 2♠ is necessary with Qx. Bid 3NT. The fact that you did not bid 3NT when 1♠ came back to you but you do now clearly shows that you have half a stopper (perhaps even Qxx).

And how exactly are we going to get partner to bid notrump first on Qx later in the bidding?

Well, that's not that hard.

I'll add that there are two key holdings that make NT better from his side: Qx and Jxx. With Qxx you can take the ace 1st round and direct the suit establishment to overcaller. Same thing with JTx, only now you play an honor from dummy.

These Qx/Jxx holdings are not that uncommon, so, although I still prefer the 1NT rebid, I agree it's a close call between 1NT and 2♣.

Now certainly we could say that this "right-siding" business doesn't matter and I should just show a balanced hand with a balanced hand... but doesn't that apply after an overcall as well, especially since we have already denied holding a really good spade stopper by passing 1♠ to begin with?

And how exactly are we going to get partner to bid notrump first on Qx later in the bidding?

Let's say partner has Qx of spades. If it went 1♣ P 1♦ P 1NT P 3NT and you got a spade lead, the odds are quite high it's from the king, let's say 65%. If it went 1♣ P 1♦ 1♠ P P X P 1NT P 3NT and you get a spade lead, the odds are probably more like 15% it's from the king (or is the king). So obviously comparing the two auction is silly.

As for how to get partner to bid notrump with Qx (and of course there are many other holdings where he will be happier to bid it), if he cuebids next we can cuebid in return and he is almost certain to bid it. I really don't see it being such a problem, why wouldn't he bid notrump then having already made a takeout double and a cuebid and hearing us cuebid?
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.
