I think our hand rates to go positive so I would never pass. As far as 3C vs 1C, I think it depends on what you play a 4th seat 3C bid as. If it is an (almost) demand for partner to pass, and it's what you would do with x Qx Kxx AQJxxx or similar then your hand is too strong. If it shows a decent trick taking hand and invites partner to bid 3N then this is the perfect hand.

Personally I play 3C as more of a shut out bid (too good to pass, but want to preempt the opps and play 3C) so I would open 1C. Too bad it lets them get in, but I'm not willing to miss a game.

I would like 3N a lot more if our clubs were actually solid. It seems like there is just one too many hole for it here and that we will get to our good games by opening 1C and rebidding 3C. It could work well though to make them lead blind.

There is no need for weak preempts in 4th seat. So 3 should show a hand with about minimum opening strength and a long suit that is not solid.

SO I would open this type of hand with 3 and leave it to partner to bid 3NT with support and stopper in the side suits.

This hand does not meet the rule of 15.

I will open of course. I choose 3.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

My number of HCP plus the length of my two longest suits is greater than 15, so I have to open.

Think this is a bit good for 3, could be persuaded that it shouldn't be, though.

3, a little on the strong side, but still the bid with the most potential. We don't even have a trebleton major!
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

3. 2nd shortest route to 3N. Pard should be bullish about moving with QT's.

3C. This will help partner to bid and make 3NT with the right cards, friendly lead, etc

The problem is that your pard's red suit holdings are very vulnerable.

Text book hand to bid 3C.

1- you expect to go plus more often than not.
2- You dont want to allow the opps to bid, neither to show the lead nor for competing.
3- You dont expect to buy the hand in 2C.
4- almost impossible that 5C is a better game than 3Nt.
5- Highly unlikely that 4M or 3M is a better contract then 3C/3NT

What more do you want ?

For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

Just to stir some "controversy", I don't think even this is relevant, since I think 5 will be found more often now than after 1 or 3NT.

Hi,

I would go with 1C, but 3C is certainly fine.

I would open 3, and this is not a minimum.
