I have such a hand,
S J××
H A×××
D Q××
C Q××
My P open bid 1C
then
1C - 1H -
2D - 2NT -
3D - ?
Your 6CLUBS, when you bid it here, is at least a reasonable shot. You surely expect your partner to be 1-1-5-6, 2-0-5-6, or similar. You have a great hand opposite such bidding. I would be a little surprised if partner was void in spades simply because the opponents would have ten spades to the AKQ between them, and one of them might have decided to bid earlier.
I think the real culprit, however, was not the leap to 6C but rather your 2NT bid. First off, I assume you meant this as natural, but you have no spade stopper and second you were right to be thinking possible slam after 2D but 2NT suggest wasted major cards (if natural).
You have several ways to make a positive move depending upon your partnership style. If you play GOOD/BAD 2NT, you can bid 3C or 2N (artificial) depending upon your style (is 3C stronger than 2N or 2N stronger than 3C). I play 3C as the stronger of the two. So you could bid 3D over 2C showing a stronger hand than 2N (which is a lebehnshol kind of thing that forces opener to rebid 3C unless he is too good to risk you passing 3C).
If you don't play good bad 2NT, you are still thinking possible slam over 2D. So you could rebid 2S (old fashion fourth suit forcing thing). After the jumpshift, clearly this is game force. Now over 3D you can make a game forcing raise to 4C. Since this is game force, no sweat. This shows slam interest. Who knows, your partner may have a rock crusher like,
QT
void
AKJT9
AKJT98
and this slow auction will allow you to discover the spade weakness in time to avoid slam.
As for your partner getting mad, he shouldn't. Your 6C bid will surely result in a good contract at least half the time, maybe more, after partner shows a strong hand and 5-6 distribution.
