Scoring: IMP

(1♥) - 2♦ - (3♣) - 3♦
(3♥) - 5♦ - (5♥) - Dbl
(P) - 6♦ - (P) - P
(Dbl) - All Pass

So, you pulled your partner's penalty double of 5♥ and got doubled in 6♦. No one ever said you were that bright, and they may use this hand to prove their point.

The opening lead is the ♣K. You win in dummy and play a spade, RHO winning the Ace. RHO shifts to a low trump. Plan the play.

1) Small Diamond from dummy winning in hand.
2) Small ♠ ruffing with 9 in dummy.
3) A♥ pitching a ♠
4) ♥ ruffing in hand (over ruffing when needed)
5) ♠ ruffing with the J hopefully not getting over-ruffed
6) ♥ ruffing
7) ♥ ruffing back to hand pulling trump and conceding -1 unless we got fortunate ♠ honors dropping
All IMO. Junior wanting to soak up all the knowledge he can.

Sorry, I believe you have your directions backwards.

RHO wins the first round of spades and plays a small diamond.

Please revise step #1 and continue from there.

Yeah I got all turned around...

I would in this case win the A do pretty much the same thing but returning to hand with ♣ rather than ♥ as I mentioned before as I just realized East is the ♥ bidder

Apparently, everyone is dismissing this hand as a non-problem. There is a problem here, but I am not sure that it is something that is obvious. I played the hand and I won the diamond switch with the King. LHO showed out.

My partner contended that 3-0 diamonds was a very real possibility on the auction, and that the finesse was the right play. It does save a trick, but I am not convinced that I should play for 3-0 diamonds. At matchpoints it makes more sense, since 5Hx is going down if diamonds are not 3-0 and you are getting a near zero. But at IMPs that is not so clear.

Any thoughts?

By the way, we won 5 IMPs on this board even though I went for 500. At the other table, my teammates played in 4Hx making 5 for 690. So, even though my judgment of the diamond situation was not great, at least my judgment of the bidding problem was a lot better than it was at the other table.

(P.S. - we would have won 1 IMP if I had passed 5Hx, as it scores "only" 650.)

By that logic: take the diamond hook because the diamonds are 3-0.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.
