??? indeed. B)

All I can come up with is a weakish 5-7.

My hand is very good for the auction - no wasted hearts, etc.

5 now.
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

wouldn't a weak 5-7 bid 2 hearts? And wouldn't a better 5-7 hand start bidding immediately?

I'm not saying you're wrong, because I can't think of anything remotely like this bidding. I'm passing 3 clubs, though, because I am confused and because 3 clubs ought to be playable no matter what partner has. (perhaps a black hand that doesn't want to stick around for the inevitable 2 red balance, maybe 4-6 with heavy honors in spades? Not sure)

5-7? why not bid your longest suit somehow? pard is allowed to pass with a 6-5 if he thinks it's a good idea. I will bid 3. I don't think he can have a 5-5 and I don't think his clubs are longer.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

Wow what are all these shapes people are coming up with? It seemed obvious he was just a max 5-5 or longer and just a question of whether to proceed and if so how.

I am only coming up with weird shapes because (for me) this auction is basically impossible.

I think any hands with 6 spades, and strength to rebid 3 would definitely open the bidding, so partner has only 5 spades. And if his shape is only 5-5, then any hand worth jumping to 3 is likely to be an opening bid for me at w/r.

So, all I could come up with was 5 spades and longer clubs, not strong enough to open. B)

But I don't think it matters - partner has the black suits, and our hand fits well with no wastage.

If there really is such a thing as a choice of games cuebid, then 4H is for me now. (I do have 4th round controlled anyway)

Not familiar with the methods here - would 2 be checkback? If so, then partner may intend 3 as to play.

Edit: sorry - forget all that. Missed a pass. But still not familiar with the methods - what does Pass-Pass-1-Pass-Pass-2 mean?

I assume pard is 5-5 or 6-5 and too light to open. I'm not sure why he didn't bid 2. Maybe one s are longer or better. Maybe he forgot he could bid Michaels. I don't know and rather than try and guess his reasons, I'm just going to make a pragmatic jump to 5 which should have play.
The difference between theory and practice is that in theory, there is no difference between theory and practice, but in practice, there is.

The one shape he can't be is 5-5, because he didn't balance with 2. I'd rule out 5-6, 5-7, etc for the same reason. 4-6 is also unlikely, because he would either have overcalled 2 or doubled, planning to convert diamonds to clubs.

My guess would be 6-5, with suits that didn't look right for a second-seat weak two. I bid 5.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn
