You ended up in a decent spot but were unlucky.

Maybe South shouyld have bid 6♥ as a choice bid, but that might have yielded an unfortunate grand bid.

All other tables opened 1♠, top was 1♠:1n 3♠:3nt
The rest played at some level of ♠'s, 6♠ was down on the ♦ lead and ruff.

but I have a 6 card ♠ suit, I tend to open the suit rather than 2♣. My fear of being passed out has not eventuated and I have far fewer train wrecks. When I am passed out 1♠ is the right spot.

6C should make at least some of the time. Leading the unsupported ace of diamonds isn't exactly obvious.

You did 'absolutely fine' until you asked partner if he could have opened 1♠. Such 'resulting' seldom brings out the best in a partner or a partnership. 'Great spot pard, very unlucky. wdo' would have been a much preferable response.

We agree. The 2♣ opener is fine as it is 9 tricks unless there's a bad split in ♠. It is also 19 HCP so there's some danger of a pass out if neither opp has good ♥.

That being said, I wouldn't say a word if my PD decided to open 1♠. nor would I expect a comment after I opened 2♣, especially after having watched quite a few world class team games lately on viewgraph and it seems that when in doubt, they open 2♣.

The end result is bad luck and looking at the two hands together, one expects 6♣ to be a clear favorite, IMHO.

Having said all that I dont mind 2♣ here

Given that you are a favorite for 4♠ opposite partners xx xxxx xxxx Kxx I don't think you can fault the 2♣ opening. The fear of being passed out isn't the only concern. There is also the fear of having to take extra jumps waisting space or risked being later dropped by partner if partner doesn't expect you to have a super monster 4 loser hand.

I didn't make any comment about the opening until we were going through the hands after the match, there was no love lost at the table. My partner thought we should have been in a NT contract but I didnt see how to get there unless he opened 1♠

Did they really lead Ace of diamonds-diamond after the lead directing double of hearts? If so, you were unlucky to my mind, since after a heart lead, this is a very easy make.

Lucky to be a good contract that had a decent chance of making.

I see you have posted the play now.

The play is not so lucky. You might have made if I was on lead - although I did lead an unsupported ace against a slam in the weekend.
