against the same pair...

Scoring: XIMP

west deals and passes. opps stay quiet. Auction:

1 - 2
3 - 3
4 - 4
6

our result wasn't so great. 6 is obviously a bad call.
(i) how would your auction have gone
(a) assuming a standardish 2/1 variant,
(b ) any methods you like?
(ii) what call do you make over 4, if any? (instead of 6)

My 2/1 is pretty standard, and I expect a 2/1 to be a 13 count. While south is near, the shortage in partner's suit degrades it, so I would treat it as an invitational six card heart hand.
1 1NT 2 (so you know opener is limited to 16 HCP) 3.
As opener I would express the shape by 4.
As south, again 4, prepared to convert 4 to 5.
As north I would pass 4.

On the given sequence, I would assume a stronger south hand so as north on hearing 4 I would think we are in slam zone. I can't pass. Nevertheless the hand does not look that good. I bid 5 to try to draw partner's attention to the quality of his trumps.

I guess to downgrade this hand to "invitational with hearts" will be a quite unique POV.
I try 1 Spade 2 Heart 3 Diamond 3 Heart 4 Diamond 4 Heart 5 Diamond.
This had shown a 6-6 hand for sure.
Now pd should downgrade to the horrible missfit and pass.
Kind Regards

Roland

1S-2H; 3D-3H; 4D-4H; Pass, I think

The way I play it, this is 1-2-3-4, showing a minimum or subminimum GF with no interest in playing anywhere other than hearts.

#1 replace 6H with 5D, and responder may or may
not raise 5D to 6D.
#2 5D.

I think I like this start a little better in 2/1 -

1-2
3-3
3-4
P

or maybe

...
3-3N
4-5
P

Over 3 I can hope to get partner to raise spades with two or bid NT with a club stopper (and of course over 3N I'm bidding 4 but that doesn't always happen). When he instead bids 4, at least I know that he's got 7 of them (or 6 very good ones) and can pass, since unlike the original auction here he's shown hearts 3 times instead of twice.

North has an obvious pass of 4H.

IMO South was impeccable and North a tiny bid optimistic but if South had held
2 KQJ9872 QT A92
then MatMat and partner would have been congratulating each other on their judgement :)
And the deal probably would not have featured here :)

Yes, I would have passed too.
