3. If the auction had gone 1C-(5D)-5H, would you then endorse a further bid by South?

I was the 4D bidder, and despite the fact that I used the stop card, North shotgunned the 4H bid before I even finished tapping it on the table. I guess that's ONE way of showing a little extra...

They missed a slam - I wouldn't be too miffed at the tempo infraction.

I would be miffed at the tempo infraction.

But I would be happy with the result.

The bidding is perfectly normal, albeit quick.

Same over 1♣-(5♦). North has a 5♥ bid and South cannot bid on.

I actually didn't intend this post to be about the tempo infraction at all--it was just a humorous aside, especially since North chastised South when the hand was over by saying "I have to have a good hand to bid that way."

I was more interested in whether people thought the 4H bid was correct, and whether anyone felt the South hand was worth a move.

Hi,

#1 4H is fine, what are the alternatives? X or Pass?
And the bid would still be ok, if North did not have
the king of spades.
#2 Pass is fine.
#3 Depends what 5H means, it could certainly be constructed
as some kind of fit bid for clubs, looking for 7C.
As it is, the only wasted card is the jack of club, I would
not worry to much about missing 6H.
Just ask yourself, how easily you will reach 6H without the
intervention, on first insepction I say, that it is not that easy,
the 4D bid did not make it easier.

If I had to bet, if you posted the North hand as:

x AQ9xxxxx x xxx

we would have our first unanimous poll as to whether or not North should bid 4H over 4D. North is 100% wrong that he "has to have a good hand to bid that way".

Souths pass is normal. For all he knows, North has 2 diamond losers as well.

On the given hand, I would bid 5H if RHO bid 5D (instead of 4D), and I dont consider it close.

The auction is just normal.

Even on an uncontested auction it would be extremely hard to bid accurately to slam, and after the pre-empt it's basically impossible.
