Should South dbl 2 to show length?
Should S balance with 3?

Heart length is an indication that you shouldn't balance. Change the majors and you would double 2H.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

double first round.

don't balance with four trumps, ever.

Switch the majors and wouldn't you have bid 2H on the previous round?

Wow.

Assume that you do hold KJxx x AJ9xx Kxx.

You have a fair takeout double of a 1 opening bid. But this is not a 1 opening bid. You have a 1NT opening on your left, a silent partner, and a player indicating heart length on your right, but otherwise unlimited. And you want to get into the auction at the 2 level vulnerable at IMPs?

Not me.

After 2 is passed back to you, now you have a balance. But not immediately over 2.

No, Fred convinced us forummers a long time ago that a direct 2H should be Michaels Tim. Well, he convinced me.

There certainly was a thread that covered this, I didn't use the word "debate".

It's certainly not TB. I cheated, as I've already seen that episode.

On the other hand, I guess it's something that you do have to agree with your partner beforehand. Once upon a time, I was playing with a regular-ish partner but we hadn't discussed this auction before (bidding the transfer-suit). At the moment in time, I had thought it was "really obvious" to me that bidding the transferred-suit is like a michaels bid as I can wait for further actions if I had a takeout double, but my partner had inferred it as a takeout double.

I even have made a post in that thread, so I obviously read at least part of the thread. I guess it didn't impress upon me. It seems to make perfect sense today, however.
