Scoring: MP


Playing 4 card majors and a weak NT (this is important), partner opens 1C. RHO leaps in with 3S, and it is your go.

Please note that this is matchpoints, not IMPs.

If you think this is easy, there will be a second part to this question

I don't want to bid 3NT, as partner rates to have either: (1) a strong NT opening, in which case we probably need to bid more; or (2) and unbalanced hand, in which case we want to bid more and not in notrump.

The next bid may be tougher.

rather easy double... it's not that the auction will be very cozy and happy afterwards, but surely this is the best way to start off.

I'm deciding between 3NT and 4♦. Given it's MP I'll bid 3NT and hope for oppo holding KQ spades and Ace or King of hearts.

I started 3NT, but I got confused. Partner opened 1♣, not 1NT.

OK.

Double.

IMO 3N = 10, _X = 9, 4N = 5.
May miss a slam but my ♥ are bad and I have a source of tricks. Anyway, if partner has 4 ♥ and 4 ♣, he opens 1N or 1♥ rather than 1♣.

So partner has either a strong notrump without 4 hearts, or an unbalanced hand. In either case we seem to be in slam territory.
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

Remembering this is still matchpoints, you decide to double (as the consensus seems to be)

Partner now comes back to you with 4C.

1) Are you still happy with doubling, now that you've gone past 3NT at matchpoints? 4NT now IS Blackwood, whether you like it or not.

2) What are you going to try now.

x then 4 spades, I think Q 10 is satisfactory support , you have no guarantee that you will have more trumps in diamonds

Hi,

3NT, but I dont play weak NT (at least I have forgotten
the time I played it).

I dont mind X, but quite often all partner needs to know
is the stopper.

Well, if you bid 3NT here, partner passes, and you score +690. Which is not quite a zero, as you are playing in a poor standard game, and there are players in 5C.

If you doubled, and you try 4S, partner cue-bids 5H after that. If you settle for 6C, you get a 50% board. 6NT and 7C are also laydown.
