Double.

If the hearts were better, then an overcall might make more sense.

dble and the reason is that you have the reuired shape, the hcp, and should the opps buy the contract or even bid nt you do not necessarily wnt partner to lead hearts.

now if the hand were

kxx in sapdes aqjxx in hearts, then overcall

Usually this problem is given with 4-5 in the majors and lousy hearts, making it a close and interesting decision. With 3541 there is no decision. Obvious 1♥ if ever there was one.

1H all day, you need to find 5-3 fits and if you X you won't be able to bid hearts later. If you bid hearts and then X later however you show your hand exactly. The only problem comes up when you play in 1H instead of a better suit when partner can't bid 1S or 1N or 2D over 1H, but that is a very small thing to worry about compared to everything else.

Yes 100% looking for that 5-3 major fit, and since I have only 3♠ there's too much chance that PD is 4-3 in majors and we end up in the wrong spot.

I wouldn't feel any better if I doubled first and heard 1N on my left. Or 1♥.

I'd probably pass 1N. Sure they might be jacking me around but pard couldn't raise hearts and couldn't double 1N. If LHO has 4-4 in the reds, we are getting slaughtered.

I play X as takeout of clubs in this auction and always considered that to be standard. You can't really have a penalty X in this situation.

edit: wow han and josh how do you play X in this auction?
