3. When I opened 1 rather than 1NT, I planned to treat this as a balanced 18-count, and it hasn't got any worse.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

3, for all of the varied reasons suggested so far, plus others that are too secret to share.
