P-(p)-1-(4),
?

Scoring is imps.

You decided to be disciplined for a hand and pass this initially, and now you've been preempted like you deserve. What now?

I double. We have, likely, between 9 and 12 tricks in hearts and no way to explore and I expect them to go set if partner has a decent hand.

Double. Partner's 3rd seat 1 opening can be highly variable, and your hand is very defensive despite the 4 hearts.

5. This is IMPs. Doubling could easily lead to a double doubled game swing.

I would be more comforable if I knew my partner's opening bid style in 3rd seat. In any event, doubling does not guarantee a plus.

Partner is an aggressive 3rd seat opener, but less so at these colors.

Double WTP.

Way too balanced to be bidding at the 5 level.
I agree that making the ridiculous pass as dealer deserves this problem. As it happens, though, you might not be any better off after the disciplined 1 opening:

1 - pass - 1 - 4
pass - pass - double - pass
?
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

The problem is illustrated by looking at all 4 hands.

Scoring: IMP

4 spades happens to make. Looking just at the N-S hands, I would want to be in a vulnerable 5 heart game, even if it is off 2 on the actual layout.

5H because we dont open too light in 3rd, seat otherwise X.
From Psych "I mean, Gus and I never see eye-to-eye on work stuff.
For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

1) if we open 12 hcp we open south hand ..if not then
2) x of 4s is not 100% penalty......north needs to decide..defense or offense....
3) with 6-4 hand i lean towards not defending but.......not easy
4) yes sometimes they make 15 hcp games when we have 25 hcp opps.....
5) If only this was the worst disaster hand I ever have...:)

Classic double.

Really.

I would prefer fewer hearts.

I bid 5 I am not doubling with undisclosed four-card trump support.

What's disciplined about passing this in first seat "for a hand"? If you generally open these hands then passing is undisciplined.

Now this is an extremely uncomfortable position given what my partner opens on in third seat. I can't afford to pass, double with 4-card support is terrible and 5H could easily be very expensive.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.
