Scoring: MP

P-(P)-1♥-(X),
?

By partnership agreement, 3rd hand openers can be very light.

Playing 2-way drury on over X, and without fit-jumps (whether this qualifies or not for you), what would you bid with this hand?

I like 4H but it will not be a popular choice :D Works for me though.

3♣ fit jump looks fine (woops didn't read everything), otherwise 4♥

Good idea if you ignore the first post.

In the given scenario I go with 2 Diamond or 4 Heart, depending on partner.

3H is enough, partner could have a 4carder.
From Psych "I mean, Gus and I never see eye-to-eye on work stuff.
For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

4♥ without thinking too hard. We don't have to have ten tricks for this to work out well.

I like 4C fit, but it seems that isn't allowed. Failing that 4H.

Obviously it depends what you mean by 'very light'. As long as it means a sound opener or a decent suit, then why shouldn't we bid 4H? If it means partner might have a random balanced 9 count then it's a different matter.

Going with 4♥. If pard has his usual 3rd hand bag of pile, then RHO has a monster and probably will bid 4♠ or 5♦ over it.

As long as very light means he still has hearts then 4♥ should be fine.

Ok so you don't play fit-jumps but what is a passed hand 3♣/♦ - does it mean nothing?

Undiscussed in this partnership. We'll probably add fit jumps to the system eventually, but we're working through some more common problem auctions before getting to that point.

4♥ is tempting, but it depends upon whom you're partnering. I'd not advice anyone doing that with me opposite! :)

Fine - 4♥. I'm on record about 4 trump and a side 6 bagger = 5 trump and a stiff, so jam it into game.

of the things we aren't playing: 3N as a preemptive raise with a card seems perfect. 3♣ is too much and the hand is a little offbeat for 4♣, although its reasonable.

Pard is 3rd chair and I will like to see his hand.

A white third-deat opening that could be light usually looks somewhat like 3433 with three of the top four heart honors, right?

This just makes a 4♥ blast look like something that may well hang partner.

I do think that something is called for, but I'm not sure what to do. Difficult problem. If I were asked what I would do on different days, I might have different answers. With the system parameters described so far, I might even pass some times, strangely.

Oh darn, they have to find the ♠Q to make 4♠.

Thats assuming we are actually cashing 2♥ and a club.

A hand never "usually looks like a 4333", simply because 4333 is a rare shape.

What?

A hand "looks like 3433" if it would be 4333 if you could move one card to get to 3433, especially without reducing the spade count below passable/three.

Hence,

3532
3523
4432
4423
3442 and
3424

all "look like 3433."

This is the full N-S hand. I chose to make this a 4 card limit raise, LHO bid 2 spades, Partner went to 4 hearts, RHO bid 5 diamonds, passed to partner who bid 5 hearts, playing it there. Partner guessed hearts and scored it up.
